There was a time when programs abroad were very limited in terms of both purpose (language acquisition) and form (long-term). Today, however, these programs can be as varied as the people who take part in them.

Understanding the different types of programs available is the best way to pick the one that best fits your age, interests and skills. So, here is a list of the most popular programs overseas (√ marks the ones I’ve done before, ✿ marks the ones that are on my wish list):

High School Programs

high school

Age range: 14-18Duration: 6 months or 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Host family or student residence.

Description: Students in these programs attend classes in either private or public high schools overseas. Participants have the chance to truly immerse themselves in another culture by living with a host family and taking classes with local students.

Language Training Programs √

french

Age range: 16+Duration: 1 week to 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Host family, student residence, apartment, teacher’s home, hostel or hotel.

Description: In these programs, students take language classes at language schools or at universities that offer language training to international students.

Participants take classes with other international students and don’t have the chance to immerse themselves in the local culture as much, unless they choose to live with a host family.

Some schools offer more specific language training, such as English for business or English for law courses. Other schools have specific programs for people who are 50+ years old.

Language Training + Activities Programs ✿

surf

Age range: 16+Duration: 1 week to 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Host family, student residence, apartment, teacher’s home, hostel or hotel.

Description: Same as language training programs. In addition, students participate in other activities such as surf lessons in California, tango lessons in Argentina, cooking lessons in Italy or golf lessons in Australia.

Junior Programs

young

Age range: 8-17Duration: ± 1 month (summer and winter vacation only).

Types of accommodation: Host family or student residence.

Description: Designed for young participants, these are vacation programs that combine language classes in the morning with other activities—such as sports—in the afternoon and excursions during the weekend.

Academic Programs √

college

Age range: 17+Duration: 1 month (summer), quarter, semester or year.

Types of accommodation: Host family, student residence, apartment, hostel or hotel.

Description: In these types of programs, students take college classes for credit while abroad. Some students attend classes at a local university with local students and, therefore, have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the host country.

Other students participate in island programs, which are sponsored by their home universities and taught in their native languages. An island program is a good option for those who don’t speak the language of the country where they want to go.

Another interesting subtype is the Semester at Sea (SAS) program. In this program, students attend college classes while cruising around the world. When the ship is in port, students can participate in sponsored excursions or travel independently.

Continuing Education Programs (Extension) ✿

professional

Age range: 18+Duration: 3 months to 2 years.

Types of accommodation: Student residence, apartment or hostel.

Description: These programs are a good option for professionals who want to improve their skills in a specific area (e.g. business, communications, programming, law) by taking post-secondary adult courses in another country.

Participants can earn a certificate or even a degree after completing the program.

Internship Programs

internship

Age range: 18-30Duration: 2 months to 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Apartment, hostel or hotel.

Description: These programs are designed for students who want to gain experience in their fields of study by interning abroad. Internships can be paid or unpaid.

Most programs require participants to be proficient in the language spoken in the country where they want to go. However, some programs do offer students the chance to improve their language skills by taking language classes prior to the start of their internships.

Trainee Programs

office

Age range: 18-30Duration: 3 months to 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Apartment, hostel or hotel.

Description: Trainee programs are similar to internship programs, but most trainee positions are paid. In addition, trainee programs often have stricter requirements, such as years of experience or being a graduate student.

Temporary Work Programs √

au pair

Age range: 18+Duration: 3 months to 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Host family, apartment, hostel or hotel.

Description: Work programs are always paid, but are often unrelated to the participants’ fields of study.

Students are hired to perform low-skill, seasonal jobs in the service industry in developed countries (e.g. watering, cooking, driving, cleaning).

Work & Travel programs are a popular subtype. Work & Travel participants work for a period that varies between 2 and 4 months and, then, receive a grace period of 1 month to travel in the host country.

Another popular subtype is the Au Pair program. Au pairs—who are typically young women—live with a host family, performing childcare functions, as well as some housework. Au pairs also have the chance to study part-time during the program, which typically lasts 1 year.

Volunteer Programs ✿

volunteer

Age range: 18+Duration: 2 weeks to 1 year.

Types of accommodation: Host family, apartment or hotel.

Description: Participants in these programs work in developing countries in areas such as human rights, health care, agriculture and teaching. These programs are very flexible in terms of both requirements and duration.

Full Degree Programs √

books

Age range: 17+Duration: 1 to 6 years.

Types of accommodation: Host family, student residence or apartment.

Description: These programs are perfect for those who’d like to earn a post-secondary degree abroad. Full degree programs last longer than most other programs abroad and offer students a unique chance of immersion in a foreign culture.

Teach Abroad Programs ✿

teacher

Age range: 18+Duration: 2 to 12 months.

Types of accommodation: Apartment, hostel or hotel.

Description: In these programs, participants go abroad to teach a particular subject for a limited period of time. These are paid teaching assignments and the most common subject taught is English as a second language.

I hope this list helps you decide which program is the best fit for you. Feel free to asks questions or leave comments below!
